Growing up in the Midwest with Lake Michigan as her “ocean,” Maggie Marsek visited the coasts of Florida and California and fell in love with the beach lifestyle. After attending the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design, Maggie headed west to rediscover her love and immerse herself in surf culture.

Southern California, her home for the past eight years, and the places she visits come alive in her work. From brilliant hand-shaped boards and solitary pre-dusk surfers, to dusty, rusty surf-wagons and throngs of sea-dwelling birds, Maggie’s images capture the true feeling of “surf” and the accompanying lifestyle.

Her craft is completely done with film, taking advantage of neither shortcut nor preview so prevalent in the digital age. She cross-processes each piece to saturate the colors and bring out the grain, giving her images an almost dream-like appearance.
