Introducing HONEY magazine! It’s a Beachlife Style Magazine, geared towards women. It’s put out by my friends at BLUE magazine in Japan.
This first issue was sponsored by Ron Herman Japan so there was a party to celebrate the launch of HONEY at the Ron Herman flagship store in Sendagaya, Tokyo. It was called Surf Night and California female shaper, Ashley Lloyd, got to shape a board in the shop, in a temporary shaping room set up for the party where thousands of people attended and enjoyed watching her shape. A couple months before the launch party, she had been asked to shape 6 boards onto which art from 6 female surf artists would be glassed. I was one of 5 photographers asked (!!!) and Serena Mitnik-Miller got to physically paint her stylized art onto her board. The boards were shaped and glassed here before being shipped over to Japan where they were available for purchase at Surf Night. Once again, I was among great company in the talent for the art on the boards. (You’ll recognize these ladies from our recent BLUE Japan 2012 Calendar too!) Serena Mitnik-Miller, Liz Lantz, Laura Flippen, Erin kunkle, & Kassia Meador.
My friend Eric Warner photographed Ashley shaping the boards and then documented the glassing of the art onto the boards here in Encinitas. The photos are included in the first issue…
My assigned board was a 7’0″ Egg. I wanted to create a collage with just a few images but also cover a lot of space. I’m not gonna lie, it was tricky working within the given dimensions of an actual hand-shaped surfboard. It was a great challenge and I am pretty happy with the result.
What do you think?
If you get a chance, pick up a copy of HONEY. Aside from this cool project with Ashley and her feature, there are also some great features on other female artists including my friends Christine Brailsford and Susan Wickstrand.

My friends at Japanese Surf Magazine, BLUE, asked if I would be interested in contributing to their 2012 calendar featuring female surf photographers. I was in fact interested and also very humbled to be asked to be printed by them again. (You can see my first experience with them mentioned in this post)
I am also thrilled to be among the following, very talented, female surf photographers. Erin Kunkle, Laura Flippen, Kassia Meador - a fellow cross-process shooter, talented in the water and behind the lens. The multi-talented artist/photographer Serena Mitnik-Miller and Liz Lantz who recently left the West Coast (I miss you Liz!)
My photos accompany the months of January and August…. Not a bad way to start your 2012!
The calendar is available with their current issue- the last issue of 2011, so if you see it- pick it up!
