Small thoughts….

It’s summer here and the waves have been small.

The small waves are perfect for the small surfers or “Groms” as they are affectionately called…

If there is no swell and it’s not “going off” small waves are still fun for long boarding, riding mats or paipos. I spotted this Wegener paipo at Beacons last week…

And speaking of paipos, this event looks fun :) Waves or no waves, I am enjoying the ocean. It’s summer and it may be crowded, but the water is clear and (relatively) warm!

Local

Just a quick post to share some of my favorite images I recently snapped and shared on my Instagram in my beloved neighborhood of Leucadia. Enjoy!

Staycation: The Pearl

We decided to celebrate our 1 year Anniversary at the hip San Diego hotel The Pearl.

I call this a stay-cation since we were still in San Diego, but were experiencing a whole different side to it than the sleepy, little surf town we live in. I had heard a lot of great things about the Pearl and had seen pictures, but I really had no idea how small it actually was. We were bummed to find, upon our arrival Saturday afternoon, they had sold out 2/3 of the pool and lounge to a toddler’s Birthday Party-and the remaining 1/3 to a Bachelorette Party.  Not very romantic- so after we checked in, we stepped out for lunch. When we came back to enjoy the pool, the sun was gone but so was most of the crowd :)

The rest of the stay was quite pleasant, and really a fun way to celebrate.  We went to the always amazing Bali Hai on Shelter Island for dinner and returned to the hotel for a poolside cocktail, accompanied by the visual treat of  James Bond “Goldfinger” (my favorite 007, Mr. Sean Connery!) They have occasional movie nights by the pool called Dive-In Theatre.  Also, I highly recommend their Sunday Brunch - but don’t forget the Mimosa or Bloody Mary!

Wedding: Meredith & Clint

Meredith and Clint traveled all the way from Texas to get married at a family member’s home in a beautiful equestrian community of Encinitas. The color pallet was fresh, the weather was perfect and the day went beautifully! I got to work with my friend Erin of Your Event by Erin on this one, she did the event design and arranged the flowers she got from Francos. Catering by 220 Catering and music by Artistic Productions

What sweet couple, plus I had the bonus opportunity to shoot with some horses!

Maternity Photos: The Shepherds

You may remember my friends Tom & Janet’s beautiful Wedding from last year, well now they are expecting a little baby in a couple months!  I captured some quiet moments around their home & beautiful garden before welcoming baby. Their kitty, Hero, was there too :)

Most of the shoot was digital, but I also shot with my Mamiya C330 medium format camera-Portra 400 & TriX 400 B&W. The whole set is here, these are just a few of my favorites…

Garden: Fruits of our Labor

Not entirely all fruits, mostly veggies of our labor. I’ve begun documenting the growth of our new garden for 2011, and I’m going to post the progress photos soon. First, I wanted to quickly share a few of the goodies we pulled from our previous crop and one new welcome addition to the garden.

I’ve never really had turnips until recently. They are easy to grow, and maybe easier to cook with.  Slice them and saute with butter –yum!

In the last couple years I’ve become very fond of beets, red ones and golden. Rob is impartial to them, probably because he  thinks they “taste like dirt” but I love them roasted and served in a salad with goat cheese & pine nuts.

Our cauliflower started to turn purple since we picked it a little late, but it was fantastic when I pureed it and topped it with more of it, roasted.

Cabbage - We didn’t have much of it, but just enough to enjoy with my Irish St. Patricks Day feast :)

Somehow broccoli got a bad rap and is commonly disliked by children, but also adults and a certain former president. I find it pretty versitle in culinary terms, but I love it most steamed with fresh lemon squeezed on it.

Besides, how can you not think of Dana Carvey every time you eat it?

I was adamant about growing my own strawberries this year, so I planted a lot of them.
I waited for the first one to get to perfect ripeness before picking and it mysteriously disappeared before I could. Luckily, several others were not far behind, and then came this beauty! I love finding hearts in nature, so this one was perfectly symbolic to me. (Rob enjoyed the heart, I had the tasty little one )

Just 2 weeks away!

In just under two weeks, I will be among 50+ other local artists and crafters at the 2011 Spring Queen Bee Market.
Check here for more details and I will post a reminder as it gets closer.

I hope you can stop in — just in time for Mother’s Day gifts!

Baby Photography : Cienna

I am hoping to make up for my lack of a recipe post yesterday with today’s post of a beautiful baby girl. My neighbors, Julia & Ali, welcomed this beauty into their lives in January and these photos were taken just shy of her 3 month Birthday.

Her name is Cienna, and I am in love :) These are just a few of my favorites from that session…

Final Weekend at Chillers!

This is your last weekend to go and absorb some cool art at Chillers in Pacific Beach. My Bali art is up for just a couple more days! Please note, most of these are Limited Edition 1 of 1 pieces at really great prices.

My buddy,  and fellow film shooter,  Eric Warner has his amazing ocean and wave photos up along side mine too!

The weather will be nice this weekend, so take a drive to Pacific Beach and treat yourself to some art!!!

Some more images, shot on film, around my neighborhood in Leucadia, Encinitas, Cardiff & Solana Beach.
